From Manager...To Graduate Assistant... To Assistant Coach...

Recently, I had an opportunity to interview Will Lanier, an assistant coach for the Marist men's basketball team. Will discussed his pretty unique story on how he got his "foot in the door" by starting out as a team manager for the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets men's basketball team. Lanier was a 4-year student manager under the Yellow Jacket's former head coach Paul Hewitt (currently the head coach at George Mason). During his tenure serving as a student manager, Lanier had every manager's dream come true when the Yellow Jackets made it to the National Championship game in the NCAA Tournament in 2004 compiling a 28-10 record.

After paying his dues at Georgia Tech for four years, Lanier climbed to the next rung on the ladder attaining a graduate assistant spot on the St. John's University men's basketball team. While at St. Johns, Lanier was responsible for the editing of game film, scouting, video coordinating, team travel, and all other day-to-day responsibilities. During the summer, Lanier was in charge of the Norm Roberts's summer camp. While working for the Red Storm from 2006-2008, Lanier received his Master's Degree in Education.

St. John's was where Lanier met current Marist head coach Chuck Martin, who was the assistant coach under Norm Roberts at the time. Over the years of getting to know Coach Martin, Will proved to Coach Martin that he was a very hard worker and was serious about a future in basketball. Lanier's education to the game of basketball made it an easy selection for Coach Martin to take Will on board with him when he took the head coaching job at Marist back in 2009.

After paying his dues for two years as the Director of Basketball Operations for the Red Foxes, Lanier obtained his first coaching job as an assistant coach in 2010. Going into his second year as an assistant, Lanier looks for ways he can improve his coaching strategies by understanding the game more and learning from the best of the best coaches.

Below is the interview I had with Lanier:
