Hoey Creates "From The Bench" Blog

Welcome to "From The Bench"! My name is Robert Hoey and I am the creator of this blog. I am a senior at Marist College in Poughkeepsie, NY. Marist is a liberal arts college right on the Hudson River. I came up with the idea to start a blog about my experience as a Division I college basketball student manager for my capping project, which is the final senior project communication majors at Marist have to achieve before graduation.

"From The Bench" will allow college basketball fans from across the country to get an inside look at the dedication and commitment required from student managers serving their school's basketball teams. Most people are not aware of the time and sacrifice managers are forced to make. Let alone the people we get to meet, places we have gone, and most importantly the friendships and memories we have made along the journey. On this blog you will read some of my own personal stories as well as hear from other basketball managers throughout the country.

This blog hopes to gain recognition for the managerial position. More importantly, it is a blog to allow managers to share experiences and stories on what has made them successful individuals. We as managers realize that it is important that this position remains a job that is performed "behind the scenes" as we enable the team's success and not the other way around.

Any manager who comes across this blog and would like to share some information or a story about his or her managerial experience is more than welcome. Just send me an email: Robert.Hoey2@marist.edu

Let me introduce myself in a little more detail.

I am in my fourth season as a manager for the Marist men's basketball team, and third year as head manager.

I am a senior at Marist, majoring in Sports Communication and minoring in Psychology.

This past summer, I interned with the Maine Red Claws of the NBA Development League, whose NBA affiliations are the Boston Celtics, Charlotte Bobcats, and Philadelphia 76ers. During my internship I worked in the Basketball Operations Department assisting in game / practice film analysis, preparation of video edits for coaches, players, and management as well as created scouting and personal reports in preparation for the 2011 NBA Development League Draft. I also assisted in many of the community outreach programs.

During the summer of 2010, I interned in the University of Connecticut Football Equipment Room assisting with all aspects of the daily Football Operations.

I also serve on the Board of Directors for the National Association of Collegiate Basketball Managers (NACBM), serving as the Director of Collegiate Affairs as well as the conference representative for the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC).

My summer camp experience includes: The Boston Celtics, UConn, Villanova, St. John's, Hoop Group Elite / Eastern Invitational Basketball Clinics, Maine Red Claws Youth Camp and Marist.

Prior to Marist, I was a four year manager at East Catholic High School in Manchester, CT under Head Coach Luke Reilly,  advancing to the Class LL State Championship Game two years in a row.

I look forward to you participating in and making this blog a successful vehicle for other aspiring managers to share their experiences and gain insights to achieve their ultimate potential.

Thank you for reading this blog and your participation.
