From Manager, To Player

It's that time of year again when teams are hosting walk-on tryouts; who said managers can't play basketball? For some managers throughout the country the walk-on tryout period is one critical step towards transitioning from being a manager into being a player on the team.

In high school, Casey Peters, a four-year standout at Red Bank Regional High School in New Jersey, got offers to play basketball from Ivy League schools such as Yale and Dartmouth. Surprisingly, Peters decided to turn down the offers and attend Duke University. Once Peters arrived at Duke back in the fall of '07 he decided to contact the basketball office and interview for a job as a student manager and received the job.

After two years of working as a student manager for the Blue Devils, Peters saw what it took to play at such a high level. Throughout his years as a manager, Peters worked hard on his game and continued to work at his managerial position in order to impress the coaches. When junior year rolled around Peters received the great news that he made the team as a "walk-on". Although Peters did not play much, by showing his hard work, determination and by staying focused Peters dreams came true - after finishing his junior year, Peters received a scholarship for his senior season and was part of the National Championship team back in 2010.

More so than the transformation from manager to athlete, this story demonstrates how the managerial position serves as a stepping - stone for many different careers. This is just one remarkable story of a manager walking onto their school's basketball team; Peters is actually one of many former Duke managers to achieve this feat. His story should serve as an inspiration to managers as well as all sports fans, so on behalf of fans everywhere we would like to wish Casey congratulations for achieving his dreams and wish him best of luck in the future!
